What is a Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to gain a deeper understanding of a child or youth’s cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning. These assessments help identify strengths, challenges, and underlying conditions that may be affecting a child’s learning, development, and well-being.

At Penney Murphy & Associates, our psychological and psychoeducational assessments provide clarity, insight, and actionable recommendations to support children and youth in reaching their full potential.

A psychological assessment can be beneficial for children experiencing:

Learning difficulties (e.g., struggling with reading, writing, or math)
Attention and focus challenges (e.g., ADHD symptoms, trouble staying on task)
Emotional or behavioral concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, mood regulation issues)
Social difficulties (e.g., challenges with peer relationships, social anxiety)
Developmental concerns (e.g., delayed milestones, giftedness, cognitive delays)

A psychoeducational assessment is a specialized type of psychological assessment that focuses on how a child learns and processes information. It evaluates:

✅ Cognitive abilities (e.g., problem-solving, memory, reasoning skills)
✅ Academic skills (e.g., reading, writing, math proficiency)
✅ Executive functioning (e.g., organization, time management, impulse control)
✅ Emotional and behavioral patterns that impact school and home life

Psychoeducational assessments can identify learning disabilities (such as dyslexia or dysgraphia) and provide recommendations for school accommodations to help students succeed.

Assessments & Testing for Children & Youth

Our Registered Psychologist (Provisional) Jolissa Simon
specializes in psychoeducational and psychological assessments for children and youth ages 4 – 22.

Jolissa provides in-depth evaluations to help identify:

Mental health concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, emotional regulation challenges)
Intellectual challenges (e.g., cognitive delays, giftedness)
Specific learning disorders (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia)
Behavioral conditions (e.g., ADHD, impulse control issues)
Diagnostic evaluations for a range of psychological and educational needs

What to Expect from an Assessment

The assessment process is designed to be thorough yet child-friendly. It typically includes:

🔹 Phone or Video Consultation with Jolissa.
The consultation will determine which type of assessment/evaluation is required. .After your consultation, the total cost of the assessment will be determined and you will receive a written quote with a breakdown of services.
🔹 Initial Meeting – Gathering background information on academic history, behavior, and development.
🔹 Testing Sessions – Engaging, standardized tasks that measure cognitive, academic, and emotional functioning.
🔹 Comprehensive Report – A detailed breakdown of strengths, challenges, and tailored recommendations.
🔹 Feedback Meeting – A review of the findings with parents/guardians, along with strategies for support at home and school.

The entire assessment process for children and youth encompasses approximately 3 – 4 sessions with variable intervals between each appointment.

A detailed evaluation report will be delivered, outlining any identified diagnoses or areas requiring further intervention and support.

Advice for educational advancement, mental health care, and potential treatment strategies will be included in the report.
