STRESS MANAGEMENT TIP #45 – Build a Great Playlist

It’s true! Music soothes the soul. And right now, I think we can all us a little soothing. Music has always been a huge part of my life. And it continues to be an integral part of my stress management daily.

Isn’t it amazing how hearing a particular song can take you back to a specific place in time?

Whenever I hear Heart’s Barracuda or Aerosmith’s ‘Walk This Way’ I am instantly transported back to my teen years driving down 8th Street in my baby blue Mustang (with the driver door barely hanging on to it’s hinges).
I can feel the wind in my hair, driving down 8th Street in my Mustang Convertible with Gino Vannelli’s ‘Wild Horses’ blasting from the speakers. Obviously, I spent a lot of time cruising 8th Street back in the day 😊

Another favorite is Boz Scagg’s ‘Harbour Lights’. I have a wonderful memory of being on a cruise ship pulling out of the harbour in St. John’s USVI at sunset. When I hear it, I am instantly transported to the balcony of our stateroom, with the song playing and feeling so relaxed and happy.

There are so many songs that bring comfort, make me feel good, and make me remember times past and fun had.

I’m sure you’ve got songs like that, too.

Because of all of the stress and uncertainty that we’re experiencing of late, I find myself going to my music even more than usual for distraction, comfort and a head break.

I’ve even put together a new playlist, specifically for this crazy stressful time. Some of my favorites that I’ve included are Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’ by David Lee Murphy, Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Bama Breeze’, ‘Goin’ Back’ by The Birds, Amos Lee’s ‘Windows Are Rolled Down’, ‘Walking on Sunshine’ by Katrina and the Waves, ‘The Sound of Sunshine’ by Michael Franti.

And it wouldn’t be a playlist of mine without some Van ‘The Man’ Morrison, Bob Dylan, and my all time favorite ‘Romeo’s Tune’ by Steve Forbert.

If you’re having a difficult day, why not consider building a new playlist filled with uplifting, positive and fun songs. Songs that bring back memories of good, easy and carefree days.

Feel free to add some of the songs I mentioned. And I’d love to hear your suggestions to add to my playlist.

I think Plato had it right when he said
‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’
